It takes an extra special individual to don the gloves and stand between the sticks. Goalkeepers have something a little different in their make-up: they wear different jerseys to everyone else, they are always the sole player in their position in the starting XI, and they are usually one of only two or three in an entire club or national team squad.
Despite their special status, the guardians of the goal are almost always overlooked when it comes to awards, or meaningful recognition. They often do not appear in the headlines, keeping clean sheets is less attention-grabbing than scoring goals.
However, their time has now come. Starting at the 2017 The Best FIFA Football Awards, a new award will recognise The Best FIFA Goalkeeper.
From a final shortlist compiled by FIFA, a panel of FIFA Legends will vote for the winner. All award winners will be revealed at The Best FIFA Football Awards show in London on 23 October.
