Football in Benin

The first Goal Project
At its meeting on 4 March 2002, the Goal Bureau approved a technical centre in Porto Novo, as well as a football school in Abomey. These facilities are to be built with the financial support of Goal and the FIFA Financial Assistance Programme, while the government has donated the land for the centre. Construction work was delayed for a number of reasons, but the work is now underway and the technical centre and football school should be completed in the summer of 2004. Both centres are sure to help develop football across the country and therefore secure the future of football in Benin. Furthermore, the FIFA Financial Assistance Programme has helped to build a two-storey office block in Cotonou for the association, and also paid for a new bus for the national team. Moreover, regional leagues have been introduced and the teams in the top two divisions have been given starting capital to enable them to play their matches.
